The Mother Load

When I was a young(er) mom, and full of All Motherly Wisdom, I would often hear other moms discuss the difficulty of showering.  I, in my absolute certainty, internally scoffed.  My babe was a mere infant and I managed to shower once, even twice, a day.  I even managed to do my hair and make-up and dress in nice clothes.

I was clearly above them all.

After I had Andrew, and entered the realm of Mother to More Than One Child, I knew I was still above other moms.  I continuously managed to shower daily, get dressed, do my make-up, exercise, read a million stories to my eldest, teach my baby math, cook healthy and delicious meals, volunteer at dozens of organizations, organize fantastic murder mystery dinners, and other fantastic things*.  I was the Homemaking Queen.

Then I had Baby A.  That showering thing? Yeah, I get it now.

Excuse me while I go eat a big slice of humble pie.

*I might have exaggerated these accomplishments slightly.

  1. I was the same way. Until my child hit school and I started working from home doing free lance things. And suddenly, here I am, with a school age child no less and I don't always have time for a shower.
I wrote an entire blog post about it a few months, detailing one of those days and exactly how it happened that day.

  2. I can get a shower in, but it is in no way relaxing. There is always someone coming in or banging on the door crying if I try to lock them out. A couple days ago, my two year old comes in and says what I hear to be, "Paul is dead." Over and over. I freaked a little, then asked her to repeat what she said until I understood. "Paul is BAD." Whew! Crisis averted. However, anything could happen to those unsupervised kids during my mere 5 minutes in the shower. Shaving legs happens once a week on the weekend when daddy is home.

    1. Yes, I've had many similar episodes of the Paul Is Dead variety. Not exactly conducive to a relaxing shower. ;)

  3. I have been a mother for 19 years. My husband has begun to do some of these "motherly chores" while I dive fully into business mode. I watch him and some days I see him soar. Other days his temper fails him too. And I realize, yep, it's a tough, tough job.
